Abstract:

Forests, as one of our important natural resources that have met many needs of humanity from ancient times to the present, were accepted as areas that everyone could freely benefit from in the Ottoman Empire until the 19th century. The rich forest presence on the lands of the Ottoman Empire, which spanned three continents, had considered as a natural resource like air and water for many years. At the Industrial Age this situation changed and became much more comprehensive with the newly developed forestry policies. Under the influence of the Tanzimat Period, a chain of reforms as the firs stepof industrilization in the field of forestry were taken in 1840, and a unit for forestry administration was formed. The forestery administration with the advisory of French experts, continued its development under the supervisions of different ministries. In this study, forest flora and forestry activities in the Sanjak of Aydın in Aydın Province that has drown attention among the distinguished provinces with its fertile lands, rich production and mines from the ancient times to the present day are examined, and their contributions to the Ottoman economy are discussed as well. The sources of this study are -apart from second hand sources and the yearbooks of Aydın Province.
