Abstract:

The purpose of this quantitative research is to investigate the mobility patterns of Turkish students between provinces and regions by examining their placements according to the results of the 2021 Higher Education Institutions Exam (YKS) in Turkey. This study is significant as it provides the latest situation of student mobility after the placement of 2021 YKS by analyzing data from all admitted students. In order to demonstrate the student mobility between provinces and regions, various regional and provincial analyzes have been made, and data visualization tools have been used, such as chord diagram and quadrant charts. The results show that students’ provinces of residence are a significant determinant of the placement of the students. Students tend to prefer big cities, especially the three metropolitan cities (i.e., Istanbul, Ankara, and İzmir) and the cities which are close to their residences. Nonetheless, the results show that the metropolitan cities with population advantage are not only centers of attraction but also source for other provinces, especially for their neighbors, by sending students.
