Abstract:

The systematic surface surveys made in the area showed that Şanlıurfa and its surroundings have been inhabited since the Neolithic Period. As a result of the researches conducted in the region since 1987, the number of settlements giving Neolithic finds did not exceed the fingers of a hand. However, recent work in and around Harran has shown us that the region has been intensively inhabited since earlier times. In the Tektek Mountains region in the east of the Harran Plain, lots of settlements belong to the Pre-Pottery Neolithic Period have been discovered and this proved that the history of the region went to more ancient times. Also, wildlife trap areas in the region show that one of the livelihoods is based on wildlife hunting. When it comes to wild animal hunting in Harran and its environs, the first animals come to mind are gazelles. One of the best proofs of how intense the gazelle population in the region is the hunting that the people from the region with modern equipment made in the Tektek Mountains until 50-60 years ago. It is understood how important the gazelle is in the Neolithic period when it is thought that 45-50% of the animal bones recovered from the excavations are gazelle bones in settlements belonging to the Neolithic Period in Şanlıurfa.
