Abstract:

A study was conducted under field conditions at Jimma (Melko) and Metu (Hurmu) during three cropping seasons from 2017 to 2019 to evaluate the agronomic performance of 10 Napier (Pennisetum perperum) grass accessions in acidic soil. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The tested genotypes showed significant variation for most measured agronomic traits except plant height, number of tillers per plant, and leaf-to-stem ratio (LSR). The location showed a significant difference for all measured agronomic traits. The genotype-environment interactions also showed significant differences for dry matter (DM) yield and LSR traits. The environment and genotype main effects accounted for 52.17% and 26.93% of the overall variation for dry matter, respectively. Genotype-environment interaction explained 20.88% of the variance for the dry matter yield trait. The differences in dry matter yields observed in the experiment were due to variations in tested accessions, environments, genotype-environmental interaction effects, soil acidity, and plant height. Genotypes including 16791, 16743, and local/16984 had a higher and above-average DM yield, a minimum deviation from the regression line (S2di), and a regression coefficient close to one. These Napier grass genotypes are considered the most desirable and stable among the ten evaluated genotypes, depending on the Eberhart and Russell regression models. Therefore, Napier accession 16791 and 16743 are the better options to be scaled up for production and utilization in southwestern Ethiopia due to higher dry matter yield and stability performance across environments.
