Abstract:

The point at which we know beyond doubt that Beyoğlu is one of the neighbourhoods of İstanbul which is exposed to destruction of urban transformations. Nowadays, urban transportation projects which are performed more quickly, arbitrarily and unconsciously have devastated the historical pattern of region and covered up beyond recognition the appearance of İstiklal Street which is one of the places of memory in İstanbul. This project which is about the politics of memory loss, destroys the streets, districts, houses and shops, damages the connection between the city and its history. The text flows through the view of flaneur whom s/he defined by Walter Benjamin as idler and s/he looks for the tracks of collective memory of the city on spaces. The flaneur who roams on the Street guides the literary works which have touched the past of Beyoğlu. This study will aim to examine the structure of urban transformation projects which ignore collective memory and history by the mediation of Benjamin’s notion.
