Abstract:

The livestock sector supports many people, mostly the poorest, in the countries of sub-Saharan Africa and is likely to continue to be so for decades to come. Many of those whose livelihoods and livelihoods depend on livestock are under extreme pressure from global forces of economic growth, competition and integration, which are leading to rapid structural change. In addition, the total consumption of meat, eggs and milk in these countries has increased by about 50% since the early 1970s. With the increase in incomes and the expansion of cities, there is an increase, local demand for animal products and pressure on natural resources. Given the vulnerability of large livestock to climatic and health hazards, animal production development strategies and the fight against poverty and malnutrition pay more and more attention to short-cycle animals, among which poultry occupy a place, of choice. In rural areas, traditional poultry farming contributes largely to the income of rural families, covering food needs and ensuring social functions with relatively low investment. Because of its many potentials, traditional poultry farming can help improve food security and reduce poverty in Senegal. The objective of this study is to characterize the farming systems of poultry flocks in rural areas in the Kolda region. The methodology is based on documentary research, fieldwork and data processing and analysis. The results show that poultry farming, although being a secondary activity for the breeder, nevertheless constitutes a significant source of income, through the sale of birds. The decision to sell comes from the head of the family in most cases and farmers use their poultry as needed. However, sales are not aimed at times when chickens are expensive such as parties, and are done in the village, town or by the road. In all concessions, poultry is exchanged for small ruminants. The proceeds from the sale are used to meet certain needs of poultry farmers: domestic expenses, schooling for children, repayment of credit. Self-consumption is the main cause of breeding, with a certain preference for local poultry over mixed-breed. This consumption occurs especially during a visit from a foreigner or during ceremonies (baptisms, religious festivals, weddings).
