Abstract:

This research paper addresses coexistence between followers of different faiths and civilizations in two sections: the first examines coexistence between religious adherents and civilizations as a concept and its origins, as well as the relationship between interfaith dialogue and coexistence of religious adherents. The first section also examines coexistence through the lens of Islamic revelations, namely the Quran and Sunnah. The second section examines the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s efforts and role in achieving coexistence among followers of different religions and civilizations, particularly given its unique position and stature to do so. The researcher examines the Kingdom’s coexistence initiatives, starting with the 1926 Makkah Convention, to the 2008 Makkah Convention and the Madrid and New York conventions, culminating in the [Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques] King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz International Centre for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue (KAICIID) in 2011. Finally, the researcher clarifies the key principles and constants of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s efforts towards coexistence, which are derived from the true Islamic faith. This includes an assessment of the role played by the Kingdom, and the significant impact their efforts have had on defending Islam and giving a true picture of Arabs and Muslims in the face of the worst types of attacks and distortion.
