Abstract:

The study tackles the relationship between the Armenians and Sultan Abdul Hamid the Second (1876-1908). The importance of the study emanates from the special nature of the relations between the two parties, as is represented in the relationship of the ruler with his subjects. The study found that the Armenians ascended to senior positions in the Ottoman Empire and lived a decent life under the rule of the Ottoman State to the extent that even some of them were promoted to the position of Minister of the Ottoman Treasury during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid II. Despite the great trust granted to them, the major European countries tried to provoke political unrest and conflict between the Ottoman and Armenian governments, and succeeded in their planning against the Ottomans when the Armenian crisis erupted after the Ottoman Russian War in 1877. The pressure of the Armenians on the Ottoman government to obtain privileges to allow them to gain self-rule through the attempt to cut the eastern part of Anatolia was instigated by the Russians. But the Ottoman Empire stood against this project, which made the European states incite and support the Armenians to destabilize the Ottoman-ruled state through the establishment of associations that draw up plans against the Ottoman Empire. The plan involved connivers within the Ottoman Empire to implement these plans. The study focuses on the resistance of the Ottoman Empire to all the subversive schemes that were carried out against it. Armenians eventually succeeded to topple Sultan Abdul Hamid II.
