Abstract:

ABSTRACT Identity, as a construct shaped by contemporary phenomena, is increasingly influenced by digitalism. This study examines how identity transforms in the digitalization process, focusing on the postmodern individuals identity as fluid, detached from foundations or belonging, and directed toward consumption by capitalist ideology. Online games, a significant domain within the digital world, are highlighted as platforms where identity is reconstructed. Online games, which offer public spaces for interaction, claim to provide individuals with a sense of belonging, status, and stability that they may lack in offline life. Conceptually, games possess the potential to challenge dominant narratives, promote opposition, and contribute to cultural construction. However, as digitalization commodifies games within a capitalist framework, they lose these transformative potentials. Instead, games reconstruct dominant narratives, reduce individuals to passive subjects, and deepen identity crises by distancing players from meaningful socialization. Using digital ethnography, this research explores World of Warcraft as its case study, a platform offering public spaces to observe identity-related practices within player habitus. Findings reveal that while players construct their identities through gameplay, this process does not occur in a free or creative space but within one that reproduces capitalist social practices and power dynamics. Players are constrained both in designing their avatarsrepresentations of their identityand in their in-game actions, limiting their autonomy. This study demonstrates how online games, despite their promise of alternative identity constructions, reinforce systemic ideologies, contributing to the perpetuation of identity crises in the digital age.

World of Warcraft oyununun sağladığı kamusal alan, oyuncu habituslarında sergilenen pratikleri gözlemlemeyi mümkün kılmıştır.
