 عانى المجتمع الجزائري لأزيد من مائة سنة سياسة تعليمية محكمة من قبل الاستعمار الفرنسي، كانت آثارها قاسية على سلوكيات أفراده، حتى أصبح يعيش فراغا في الروح، وخدشا في العقيدة، وانهيارا في الأخلاق؛ جراء الأمية التي أصبحت السمة الغالبة على هذا المجتمع. ولما برزت الحركة الإصلاحية في الجزائر في بداية النصف الأول من القرن العشرين، كانت فلسفتها تقوم على إعادة بعث هذه الروح من جديد، ومقاومة السياسة الاستعمارية بكل الوسائل الممكنة. ويعتبر إحياء العملية التربوية في المساجد الحرة التي عملت جمعية العلماء على تأسيسها في الجزائر منذ نشأتها، أحد أكبر هذه الوسائل التي تم الاعتماد عليها بغرض إحداث تأثير عام في المجتمع؛ وذلك من خلال تعليم، وتكوين، وتهذيب أكبر عدد ممكن من أبناء الجزائر، حتى يستعيدوا ما وقع على روحهم وعقيدتهم وأخلاقهم من دمار، وبعث الوعي واليقظة في نفوسهم من جديد.
	فالجمعية بهذا العمل تكون قد عمدت إلى اعتماد أسلوب المواجهة الثقافية مع الاستعمار الفرنسي لتحقيق إحدى غاياتها والتقليل من سياسته التجهيلية؛ التي جعلت المجتمع الجزائري يتخبط فيها منذ دخوله. وكانت مختلف المساجد الحرة التي سهرت الجمعية على إنشائها منذ ثلاثينات القرن العشرين صامدة ولم يتوقف نشاطها حتى اندلاع الثورة التحريرية.
Abstract
For more than a century, the Algerian society has suffered from a tightened  French educational colonial policy, with its cruel effects on the behaviour of its members to a such extent that is came to experience a void in the soul, a stigma in the faith and a collapse in the ethics due to the illiteracy which became its dominant feature. When the Reform Movement emerged in Algeria at the beginning of the first half of the twentieth century, its philosophy was based upon the resuscitation of this spirit and the resistance against the colonial policy with all the available means. The revival of education in free mosques established by the Association of Ulema in Algeria since its inception was one of the most important means on which it has relied to have an impact on the society. Through the educating, training and refinement of the largest number of the sons of Algeria, it aimed that the latter recover from the toll of destruction directed against their spirit, faith and morals and revive their vigilance and consciences.  
 The association adopted a method of cultural confrontation with French colonialism to reduce the latter’ blinding policy. The various free mosques that the Association has created since the 1930s have stood strong and unshakeable and its activity did not cease until the outbreak of the Algerian Liberation Revolution.
