Abstract:

Earthquakes occur periodically in our country, which is located on the Alpine-Himalayan belt one of the most important earthquake lines in the world and on three important fault lines such as the North Anatolian fault line the West Anatolian fault line and the East Anatolian fault line. This study aims to examine the effect of social media use on the perception level of disaster awareness. Societies that have developed disaster awareness and can generally create a disaster culture can overcome disasters more easily. Therefore, increasing disaster awareness in society is vital, and social media can be an effective tool. Social media platforms can help society with life safety, communication, and emergency assistance requests during disasters. The research sample consists of 250 teachers who visited the Disaster Awareness Exhibition at Aksaray Provincial Science Center with their students in May and June 2023. A face-to-face survey was applied to the participants, and 210 people whose personal consent was obtained participated in the survey, and 210 data were deemed suitable for analysis. SPSS 25 and IBM AMOS 22 package programs were used in the analysis of the data. The results obtained according to the research findings are as follows: the participants had a medium level of disaster awareness, pre-disaster awareness, post-disaster awareness, false disaster awareness perception, and a low level of disaster education awareness perception. When the relationship between social media use and disaster awareness perception was examined, no significant relationship was found between them, and among the sub-dimensions of social media use and disaster awareness perception, a significant relationship was found only with the perception of disaster education awareness. Within this studys framework, the limited existing studies in the literature on social media use and disaster awareness perception were examined, and it was aimed to contribute to the literature on this subject by creating an empirical study.
