Abstract:

Ulysses and the famous writer differ in many ways, including their lifespans, cultures, and other aspects. To confuse one for the other is almost pretentious. When one sets sail (Ulysses), it is to return to his homeland; when the other travel, it is to find his wife Esther. Their journeys to fulfill their quests are very different, but both lead to satisfactory results. It’s question in this reflection to know why the famous writer considers himself like Ulysses. Using comparative literature, we examine the reasons that drive the two characters to set out on their journeys, the places they visit, and the outcome of their respective quests. We conclude that the famous writer could never be Ulysses. But he can be a modern-day Ulysses because this is an era in which virtue is the least shared commodity; a world in which some of the greatest are also the least virtuous. Paulo Coelho thus asks us to consider more often the spiritual side of the person and not the sins committed because of the physical inclinations.
