Abstract:

In Kyrgyz society, diligence has historically been regarded as a personal virtue and a foundational value essential to maintaining social order. Individuals who demonstrate effort and industriousness are accorded respect within the community, whereas idleness is socially disapproved and frequently leads to marginalization. Laziness is commonly perceived as a primary cause of poverty and failure, and unproductive individuals are often seen as lacking value in the eyes of society. In Kyrgyz proverbs, labor is conceptualized as a means of material gain and a source of inner fulfillment and personal integrity. These proverbs function as a form of intangible cultural heritage, transmitting the collective values and worldview of the Kyrgyz people to subsequent generations. Proverbs are vital in preserving and perpetuating traditional norms, moral values, and collective memory in Kyrgyz culture. Through proverbial expressions, the Kyrgyz have elevated the status of hard work, framing it as a sacred duty while expressing strong disapproval toward laziness. In this way, diligence is promoted as both a personal ethic and a social obligation, encouraging productivity at both individual and communal levels. This study examines how the concepts of diligence and laziness are represented in Kyrgyz proverbs from individual and societal perspectives. Proverbs reflecting these themes have been collected and categorized according to their thematic content. The semantic and cultural meanings embedded within the proverbs are analyzed to underscore the significance attributed to labor and productivity in Kyrgyz society.
