Abstract:

This paper is mainly concerned with the last two types of Ta'alluq, namely noun to verb and particle to both, noun and verb, and their implications as assumed by Al-Jurjaani who used this term to tackle all the syntactic relations and to summarize these structural relations in three main types; noun to noun, noun to verb and particle to both. This paper handles the second and third types as presented by Al-Jurjaani and meanwhile from a Chomskyan view. It will be proved that Al-Jurjaani implicitly indicated various notions which conform to pivotal concepts and principles in Chomsky's syntactic theory. Among these is the notion of a head and its dependents. He also used this term to express the idea that the second type, the verb-noun relation, has one common thread which unifies the various verb-dependent relations. He determined these relations from a purely structural angle as he used case as a focal point in this study in addition to the argument (thematic) structure of the verb. He also provided the ways for the particle to combine with its dependents. The main contribution of this section is that the relation of particles and their dependents involves particles which have semantic content and they are divided into three main types: negative particles, question particles and conditional particles. They are tackled in view of the idea that they are heads which take a clause as a complement and the idea that they have scope over the entire complement sentence.
