Abstract:

The economic and social developments in different societies is closely related to the development of the natural resources, together with the ways in which territory is exploited and managed, especially in the recent decades where environmental challenges have arisen. The population growth and the expansion of urbanization, alongside the climate change and the great economic projects, have negatively impacted not only human health but also sustainable development. Among the problems that have had a negative influence on the environment are the extractive activities that have contributed to the instability of the lands and to the decline of the natural resources. The Deir quarries clearly exemplify such an influence. Field observation and the implementation of impact study on the environment have revealed the negative effects of exploitation that far outweigh its advantages. Also, prioritizing quick and immediate profit does not respect the conditions dictated by the specifications, nor does it take into account the post-sustainability plan that results from the sustainable environmental management. On that account, the underlying purpose of this paper is to make clear the negative effects caused by the exploitation of quarries in the rural centers of deir Beni Mellal. The study therefore surveys their impact on the surface and ground water resources that constitute the most important factors leading to the human stability in the region. Keywords: Natural resources, the environment, quarries, sustainable development, sustainable management of the environment.
