Abstract:

This study aims to delve into a fundamental issue that has long been ignored by historians and archaeologists alike: the phenomenon of the survival and disappearance of some villages and cities in Morocco dating back to the medieval period. This is done by introducing examples of cities and villages in the Tadla region, clarifying the extent of historical references made about them in medieval Arabic historiography, and highlighting the economic, military, and spiritual roles they played. In addition to monitoring some urban centers, some of which were destined to survive and retained the same name, and those that disappeared for various reasons, so their name disappeared and was replaced by another, based on what some medieval Arabic sources provided, from spontaneous indications and scattered data, which implicitly or explicitly refer to the Tadla region with its historical cities and villages.
