Abstract:

The conflict between Israel and Palestine, which has been going on for years, moved to a new dimension in 2023. On October 7, 2023, following a HAMAS attack on Israel, Israel launched a fierce offensive against Gaza and its borders. However, the killing of civilians by Israeli forces drew the reaction of the world community. In accordance with the genocide convention, South Africa applied to the UN International Court of Justice ICJ on December 29, 2023 and filed a genocide case against the Israeli government in The Hague. The case was heard on January 11-12 and decided on January 26. In its judgment, the ICJ did not comment on whether a genocide had in fact taken place. The attitude of the international media in times of conflict is of particular importance in terms of influencing public conscience. Media organizations can influence the news language within the framework of their own ideological patterns. This study aims to analyze the approach of newspapers to Israels attacks on Gaza and the genocide case in the context of news language. In this context, the reflection of the genocide case initiated by South Africa against Israel at the UN International Court of Justice was analyzed in the Western press newspapers Le Monde, The Washington Post and The Guardian according to Teun Van Dijks Critical Discourse Analysis. The dates of January 11, 12, 13, 2024 when the trial started and January 26, 2024 when the trial concluded were taken as the dates. As a result of the study, it is seen that Le Monde and The Washington Post structured the news within the framework of similar ideological views, while The Guardian tried to present a more objective and balanced framework.
