Abstract:

The manuscript titled Mutat al-Asmā fî İlm al-Samā, authored by Aḥmad b. Yūsuf al-Tīfāshī d.1253, serves as a significant scholarly work within the context of Islamic music history, providing valuable insights into the state of musical art during the seventh AHthirteenth century AD, across the regions of Egypt, Afriqiyah and Andalusia. This manuscript offers a comprehensive examination of various aspects of musical culture, including the orchestration of musical gatherings by rulers and governmental dignitaries, the diverse genres of music performed in these gatherings, the compositions and lyrics recited, the instruments employed, the characteristics of accomplished musicians, and the various forms of dance presented. The study commences by offering a succinct overview of the author Tîfâşîs biography and his literary contributions. The primary focus then shifts to the central subject matter, the previously unexplored manuscript Mutat al-Asmā fî İlm al-Samā, elucidating its manuscript copies and surveying relevant research conducted within the Arab world. The investigation proceeds to identify classical sources referenced by the author in his work, along with an evaluation of citations extracted from these sources. Finally, a thorough analysis of the manuscripts content is undertaken, delineating section headings that address core themes within the realm of musical art and subjecting them to a detailed content analysis. The overarching objective of this study is to introduce and underscore the significance of al-Tīfāshīs work, Mutat al-Asmā fî İlm al-Samā, within the annals of Islamic music history and culture. In doing so, the aim is to illuminate the intricate nexus between rulers, diverse segments of the populace, and the realm of musical art during the thirteenth century AD century across the regions of Egypt, Afriqiyah, and Andalusia.
