Abstract:

Adolphus Slade, a British naval officer, found an opportunity to know Turks during an incursion made by the British-French and Russian joint forces, of which he was a part, against the Ottoman-Egyptian fleets in Navarin in 1827. Slade who had visited Istanbul for the first time in 1829, cruised in the Blacksea with Captain Pasha in 1830, 1831 and 1832 and went back to his country with pleasant memories. He was dispatched to Istanbul in 1850 during the commissioning process of the British specialists in the navy, and did important services in the Turkish navy under the title of Müşavir Pasha until 1866. Slade, who then found the opportunity to closely observe the Ottoman country and society, expressed through a sophisticated style his love for the Turks, the hospitality and the exquisite character of the Turkish society. Besides, he gave examples of the comfortable and peaceful lifestyles of the non-muslims living under the Ottoman rule, manifesting the just ruling system of the Turks.
