Abstract:

In this paper, I have tried to trace a very big problem around which discussions have taken place between two currents: the first is the Salafi current, which clings to the past and does its best to revive it because it sees in it great glory that was achieved in a time gone by, and sees in it the most successful solution to overcoming our historical backwardness. As for the second trend, which is ably represented by the thinker Abdel Laroui; I mean: the modernist trend. He is the one who seeks liberation from the past and wants to cut off from the negative that is included in the heritage, and to abandon the conceptual equipment that he enjoys, especially the concept of the caliphate. This concept is an Islamic innovation that was realized in a specific time, but its realization during the contemporary period, according to Abdullah Al-Aroui, is impossible due to the absence of its objective conditions, despite the serious attempts made by the traditional Salafi trend to revive it again.
