Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to discuss work ethic values in Islam
in terms of Weber’s Protestant work ethic thesis. Weber argued that Protestantism,
in particular Calvinism, has played a crucial role in the development
of capitalism. After the Tanzimat a contrary argument has been on
the Turkey’s agenda, suggesting that Islam discourages economic progress.
However, findings of an empirical research conducted among Muslim managers
revealed that they showed higher Protestant work ethic scores than
their Protestant and Catholic counterparts. In the light of these findings,
this paper aims to discuss in detail work ethic values in Turkey.
