Abstract:

The September 11, 2001, attacks led to an increase in racism and discrimination in the United States, and during this period, artists produced works criticizing racism to draw attention to social problems. This study particularly examines the period 2001-2021, addressing the rising phenomenon of racism in America with the post-September 11 crisis and its reflections on art. Artists such as Kerry James Marshall, Glenn Ligon and Kara Walker have made important contributions to this process. In his works, Marshall glorified African American identity and cultural heritage while criticizing marginalized segments of society. Ligon questions the complexity of race through a combination of language and visuality, while Kara Walker provocatively explores the traumas of slavery and the repercussions of contemporary racism. Their work reinforces the quest for social justice and encourages viewers to both think and act, making the transformative power of art part of social change. Their work provides a platform that encourages viewers to think and act, while strengthening the quest for social justice. In this way, critiques of racism, combined with the transformative power of art, become an important part of social change. Their works reflect not only individual experiences but also a collective memory, inspiring viewers to confront the past and seek social justice.
