Abstract:

The Prussian-French War, in
1870-1871, which led to radical changes in European politics was closely
followed by the Ottoman public. In the meantime, a few newspapers, such as Basîret published in Istanbul,
carried this war to their pages. In this war, the Basîret newspaper followed a broadcast line that supported
Prussia and exhibited an obvious partiality. In this attitude of the newspaper, the writers Konstanty Borzecki and Karol
Karsky, who were originally Polish, had a role. Basîret newspaper by some historians, the first newspaper to receive help
from a foreign state, his owner Ali Efendi is considered to be the first
Germanofil. It is
thought that Germany took advantage of Basîret newspaper’s policy and obtained
an advantage in terms of securing a psychological basis for its Drang nach
Osten (Drive to the East) policy that was to continue until the Abdülhamid II
era. In this article, the reflections of the 1870-1871
Prussian-French War on the Ottoman public will be determined by using the news
and commentaries in the newspaper Basîret.

1870-1871
