Abstract:

In every society, the drinking etiquette has been transformed and evolved through historical phases leading up to distinctive social life styles, which were shaped by their respective political structures and belief systems/religions. This formation process, by definition, has placed the drinking etiquette into each society’s body of general etiquette, which is the expression of behavioral/moral patterns that each society abides by. The emergence of universally accepted manners and behaviors, on the other hand, has also evolved in time. The drinking etiquette has been one of the most important elements of the libation parties in the Ottoman Empire. On one hand, the winehouse meyhâne owners paid utmost attention to the manners of their customers for security reasons in order to prevent material damage to their shop in case of drunken fights and possible killings, and on the other hand, they monitored the manners of their customers in order to provide a safe haven for the comfort and pleasure for all without any disturbance. This study on the drinking etiquette and meyhâne manners of Ottoman Istanbul seeks answers to the questions of what kind of factors shaped the behavior patterns in the Istanbul meyhânes, and how those patterns were transformed throughout a long period of time. The goal of the study was to determine the change and continuity during the modernization period by utilizing the travelogues, memoirs and monographies. In this respect, it was observed that drunkenness was considered as the natural and important boundary in defining the drinking etiquette in the Ottoman Empire, like the Europe of early and middle ages. The Ottoman state, in its informal and legal limitations, benefited from the experiences of Western cultures, and the norms and laws of Islamic law, as well as its predecessors such as the earlier Muslim Turkish states and the Persian civilization. In practice, all these influences shaped the alcohol consumption practices of the Ottomans in varying degrees in different historical periods.
