Abstract:

Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoğlu 18891974 is an important author who, by centering his works on the historical, social, and cultural turning points of Turkish society, presents a panorama of its recent history. Influenced in part by his temperament, he approaches the issues he addresses from an unusually pessimistic perspective, aiming through the novels he writes in this manner to contribute to the formation of the Turkish nations identity. Particularly through the symbolic traits he assigns to his novelistic characters, Yakup Kadri is able to present the problems he identifies more effectively. First published in 1928, Sodom ve Gomore narrates events in occupied Istanbul during the years when the National Struggle movement was still continuing in Anatolia. In terms of the symbolic meanings undertaken by its characters, the novel serves as a striking example of this aspect of Yakup Kadris approach to fiction. The characters of Sodom ve Gomore, through the symbolic meanings they bear in relation to various segments of society, shed light on both the ongoing issues of Turkish society since the Tanzimat era and those that emerged during the years of occupation. In this study, the symbolic meanings attributed to the characters in Sodom ve Gomore are analyzed through the content analysis method, one of the qualitative research techniques. The study also identifies the analogies that reinforce these symbolic dimensions. In doing so, it aims to provide a different perspective on the novel and to contribute to the body of research on Yakup Kadris fiction.

Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoğlu 1889-1974, eserleriyle Türk toplumunun tarihî, sosyal, kültürel kırılma evrelerini merkeze alarak, onun yakın tarihinin panoramasını ortaya koyan önemli bir yazardır. O, mizacının da etkisiyle, ele aldığı meselelere alışılmışın dışında, karamsar bir bakış açısıyla eğilerek kaleme aldığı romanları aracılığıyla Türk toplumunun millî kimlik oluşumuna katkı sağlamayı amaçlar. Yakup Kadri, bilhassa roman kahramanlarına yüklediği sembolik birtakım özellikler sayesinde, tespit ettiği problemi daha etkili biçimde ortaya koyar. İlk kez 1928de yayımlanan ve Anadoluda Millî Mücadelenin devam ettiği yıllarda işgal altındaki İstanbulda yaşananları anlattığı Sodom ve Gomore romanı, roman kişilerinin üstlendiği sembolik anlamlar açısından Yakup Kadrinin romancılık anlayışının bu yönüne çarpıcı bir örnek teşkil eder. Sodom ve Gomore romanının kişileri, toplumun çeşitli kesimlerine dair yüklenmiş oldukları sembolik anlamlarla, gerek Türk toplumunun Tanzimattan beridir süregelen gerekse işgal yıllarında ortaya çıkan meselelerine ışık tutarlar. Bu çalışmada öncelikle Sodom ve Gomorenin roman kişilerine yüklenen sembolik anlamlar nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden içerik analizi yöntemiyle analiz edilmiş ve onların bu sembolik yönlerini güçlendiren benzetme unsurları tespit edilmiştir. Böylelikle romana farklı bir bakış açısı kazandırılarak, Yakup Kadrinin romanları üzerine yapılan araştırmalara bir katkı sunulması amaçlanmıştır.
