Abstract:

The Women's Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI), which was introduced in 2012, has become a widely used tool for assessing gender-related outcomes in agricultural development initiatives. To better account for the diversity of sectoral and geographic contexts, several adaptations of the original index have been developed. These include the project-level WEAI (pro-WEAI), the Women's Empowerment in Livestock Index (WELI), and the Women's Empowerment in Fisheries Index (WEFI). Following the PRISMA guidelines, we searched academic sources and gray literature published between 2012 and 2025. Of 201 initial records, 40 met the inclusion criteria and were examined in full. The subsequent section describes the methodological approach used in this review. In accordance with the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, a search of academic and gray literature published between 2012 and 2025 was conducted. A total of 201 records were initially identified, of which 40 met the inclusion criteria and were subsequently analyzed in depth. The review's main conclusions point to several methodological innovations and contextual adaptations across iterations of the WEAI. The analysis reveals patterns in terms of regional implementation, target populations, and empowerment domains assessed, as well as the degree to which these tools have been integrated into development interventions.
