Abstract:

The vast majority of youth in our country and around the world spend most of their time on social networks and the use of social media sites by young people is increasing day by day. At this point, it can be considered that young people are trying to get rid of the feeling of loneliness through the network of relationships they create in the virtual environment. As they move to social media, it seems likely that young people will move away from the real social environment and gradually drift towards loneliness. Based on this assumption, the main purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between loneliness levels and attitudes towards social media among young people. In this study, it was also examined that young people’s loneliness levels and attitudes towards social media differentiate or not in terms of frequency of use and the tools they use to connect social media. The research was carried out on 250 high school students, 120 girls and 130 boys, who attended 10th and 11th grades of four state schools in Kadıköy district, İstanbul. In this study, it was used “UCLA Loneliness Scale” Demir, 1989 to measure the loneliness levels of high school students, “Social Media Attitude Scale” Otrar ve Argın, 2015 for measuring the attitudes towards social media and “Personal Information Form” to gain information on other variables. Results showed that there was a significant positive correlation between the total score of the Social Media Attitude Scale and the total score of the UCLA Loneliness Scale. In addition, a positive significant relationship has been found between UCLA Loneliness Scale scores and some subscale scores of Social Media Attitude Scale social competence, need for sharing and relationships with teachers , and a negative significant relationship has been found between UCLA Loneliness Scale scores and the social isolation subscale scores of Social Media Attitude Scale. On the other hand; the level of loneliness of young people and attitudes towards social media differ according to the frequency of use of social media and the tools they used to connect social media. Based on the findings obtained from the research; suggestions have been made in the context of protective and preventive services to reduce the risk of addiction in young people who are turning to social media to alleviate the feeling of loneliness. Moreover, suggestions have been made for further research in order to better explain the nature of the reciprocal relationship between loneliness and social media in young people.
