Abstract:

Soildegradationis one of the key characteristics of the upper Oued El-Arbaa basin, located in the foreland of the Eastern Rif in Morocco, due to the widespread occurrence of variousforms of water erosion, particularlysheeterosion. This degradationresultsfrom a combination of naturalfactors, the mostsignificant of whichisclimatevariability. The regionexperiencesaggressive, sudden, and temporally and spatiallyirregularrainfall, alongwithrecurringdroughtyears. Additionally, the dominance of fragile marly rocks covered by poorlydevelopedsoils on steepslopesfurtherexacerbates the situation. Human activityalsoplays a major role, notablythroughcontinuous pressure on soilresources, low-yieldsubsistencefarmingthatdepends on rainfall, and limited local capacities to control the spread and development of water erosion. Theseconstraintsoften lead inhabitants to migrate and abandon their land, makingit more vulnerable to variousforms of degradation. This study relies on the analysis of annual and seasonalrainfall data and itsrole in determining land use areas and activatingdifferentforms of water erosion. The Universal SoilLoss Equation (RUSLE model) wasapplied to quantitativelyassess water erosion in the upper Oued El-Arbaa basin within the Eastern Rif foreland, and to evaluate the risk of soildegradation due to water erosion.
