Abstract:

Humans and jinn are entities that are superior to each other in some respects. It is not conceivable that the Qur’an, a divine book that has been revealed over a period of twenty-three years, used the sequence of two frequently mentioned words randomly. Therefore, it is very important to work on this subject. In this study, it will be tried to put forward how differences in sorting these words according to the context are evaluated by the interpreters. Our aim here is to address this issue by considering the internal integrity of the Qur’an and to evaluate the conclusions reached by the commentators. Humans and jinn are beings that are created to be free to obey God’s divine commandments or not. Their common features are their intelligence and the power to choose between good and evil. Although the essences in which they are created are different in terms of their mode of action, their strengths and abilities, they have common characteristics in terms of having the potential for divine addressing, having the potential to commit sin and good deeds, and deserving punishment and reward in return for their deeds. In places where the words “jinn” and “ins” occur together in the Quran, more often the word “jinn” is used first. The arrangement of these words, which are connected to each other by the letter of “waw” does not add more meaning to the sentence. This is because the letter of “waw” does not express priority. If the views of the interpreters are based on different systems of thought sometimes contradictory views and sometimes explications are put forward. It is also necessary to state that it is sometimes difficult to reconcile the generalizations they put forward, since the commentators do not feel obliged to comment on the places of introduction where these two words coexist. If the context is that God puts the servants to the test, the word “jinn” come first. In this context, it was interpreted that the jinn were created before humans, they were stronger than humans, they were more prone to commit crimes and their numbers were greater. While people who have more rhetorical skills than jinn are said first in bringing a similar version of the Quran, it is seen that the jinn who have high mobility on the earth and sky are mentioned first in the verse that challenges them in the context of going out of the universe. This rhetoric of the Qur’an seems to be closely related to socio-cultural situations. The fact that the jinn are sinful servants who deserve punishment is emphasized by the word of “jinn” before the word of “human”, as an answer to the first interlocutors’ ascribe the extraordinary powers to the jinn and their submission to jinn in order to protect themselves from possible damages from them. The fact that almost all of the verses on this subject, except for the verses in the Surah Rahman and Nas, are Meccan verses, makes it clear that this message is directed especially to the Meccan polytheists who are the primary interlocutors who had false beliefs about the jinn. Also, these two words are sometimes used as names. They have even been used together to strengthen the expression only in the case of a situation that applies to someone. It is possible to connect this to the common characteristics of humans and jinn and to the fact that they belong to two different areas of existence that often cross paths. It is seen that the verses mentioning jinn mostly take place to eliminate the perceptions of Arabs who didn’t follow Islam, about the influence and power of jinn in revelation. Because there were people who worshiped jinn, believed that they knew the ghayb (future/unknown) and brought the Quran to the Prophet during the period of Jahiliyya. From this point of view, the Quran conveys the message to its interlocutors that jinn cannot access the ghayb, they can’t send revelation, and that they are servants like humans. In addition, it is revealed that the jinn who listen to the Quran do not hesitate to believe and it is said that the first interlocutors should believe in the Quran which even the jinn to whom they attribute extraordinary power, believe in. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Qur’an talks about jinn with the aim of correcting the polytheists’ unrealistic perceptions about the jinn.

Ayrıca Kur’an’a kulak veren cinlerin Kur’an’a inanma konusunda tereddüt göstermedikleri ortaya konularak abartılı güç isnat ettikleri cinlerin bile inandığı Kur’an’a ilk muhatapların da inanmaları gerektiği söylenmektedir. Dolayısıyla Kur’an cinlerden söz ederken müşriklerin cinlerle ilgili gerçek dışı telakkilerini düzeltme amacı gözeterek cinlerden bahsettiği sonucuna ulaşmak mümkündür.
