Abstract:

Strong relations between mass media and popular culture are effective in accelerating cultural transformation. In the background of the relationship between popular culture and mass media are interest groups that want to make profit from cultural products. The social effects of the economic relations network, which has economic reasons at its core, also include cultural dimensions. The cultural dimension is related to television content from popular mass media. The false consciousness and false needs created in individuals by mass media direct individuals to a consumption-oriented world. In the consumption-oriented world, commodities are turned into fetishes and the status of individuals is determined by their consumption. For this reason, television series, which are among the most watched productions in terms of their content and are the locomotive of popular culture, present consumption-related elements through certain symbols, commodify women and objects in particular, and help ensure the continuity of popular consumption patterns. The aim of this study is to examine television series in the context of popular culture and commodity fetishism. In this context, the series Adını Feriha Koydum The Girl Named Feriha, Fazilet Hanım ve Kızları Lady Fazilet and her Daughters and Şahane Hayatım My Wonderful Life were determined through the purposeful sampling technique. These series were examined using the descriptive content analysis method. Linguistic, visual, cultural and spatial indicators were analyzed along with the main characters in the series. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that the series emphasized the importance of class differences and made references to the Marxist cultural structure, and it was seen that conspicuous consumption practices were reflected through the female body and the female body was commodified.
