Abstract:

This research sheds light on the issue of Al-Taher Bin Ashour’s use of isra'iliyyat for weighting in his interpretation. It aims to highlight the approach of Al-Taher Bin Ashour’s use of isra'iliyyat for weighting in his interpretation, studying the verses that Al-Taher Bin Ashour relied on isra'iliyyat in explaining their meanings, or weighting the sayings of the interpreters therein. The study compares Al-Tahir Bin Ashour’s work in this regard with old and recent interpreters, proving one of the presumptions of weighting among the sayings of the interpreters through the interpretation of Al-Tahrir wa Al-Tanwir. The researcher adopted the descriptive, inductive and analytical method in his research. The study came up with a number of results, the most important of which were: Ibn Ashour’s extraordinary attention to the news and narrations that were included in the Torah in terms of weighting of the interpreters’ sayings. Ibn Ashour employed isra'iliyyat in weighting among the interpreters’ sayings in specific areas, namely: (identifying vague things, detailing the summary, revealing the problematic things, explaining the verse in terms of possible meaning, detailing of the story and the arrangement of its events, and the relationship between the verses). Ibn Ashour benefited from the isra'iliyyat narration in weighting among the sayings of the interpreters in (26 contexts) of the Qur’an, (19 contexts) in which he relied completely on what was mentioned in the Torah, and (7 contexts) considered it as a context of weighting evidence. Ibn Ashour was right in his weighting in (11 contexts) in the study, and was not right in weighting in (7 contexts). As for the remaining (8 contexts), these are among the things nothing was said about them and it is not possible to confirm right or wrong. I did not find any of the interpreters who consider isra'iliyyat narration to weight the interpreters’ statements in the contexts under study except for Al Qassimi in two of them.
