Abstract:

Culture
and cultural heritage are concepts which are widely discussed, defined and
subject to numerous discussions. Some of the elements that the societies
possess and gathered under the title of culture have come to our day by finding
concrete expressions and defined as cultural heritage. Throughout history,
various definitions have been introduced to the concept of cultural heritage
and its scope has been expanded. Today, at the point where conservation
understanding comes, the scope of the elements that need to be protected has
expanded beyond the structures to include the whole of values and meanings. As
a result of this enlargement, the intangible values and the tangible elements
in which these values come to life began to be discussed in the discipline of
conservation. The aim of the study is to examine the contribution of the tangible
and intangible dimensions of the cultural assets that need to be protected to
the quality of “heritage”. In this study, the association of intangible values
with concrete values was analyzed through selected cultural heritage sites
included in the UNESCO Heritage List and containing criteria VI. The areas
selected for the sample were included in the World Heritage List by including
only criteria VI and were considered as the main data source within the scope
of the study in question. The method used in this analysis process is to
associate and interpret key sites and key concepts with selected heritage
sites. As a result of the analysis, it was found that intangible cultural
values in these heritage areas were sometimes represented by a marking or
landscape, and sometimes by concrete elements such as a geological formation or
building complex. Consequently, as a tangible cultural heritage, space creates
its original heritage quality over time through its intangible values and is
maintained, protected and transmitted by heritage carriers who attribute the
heritage value.
