Abstract:

Abstract Cinema is evaluated not only an art but also a commercial commodity/value. While the producers plan a budget for a film, they also begin to thinks what he will earn in return. Apart from art cinema or independent films, the main goal of mainstream, popular films, is to make a profit. The producers, who earn in previous productions, will be able to provide financial support to other films. In this respect, it is a significant factor that the audiences go to cinema to watch the films for a certain amount of money. In other words, the presence of cinema as an economic sector in Turkey basically depends on the audience. The producers plan to increase the box office by considering a number of factors such as the script, player selection, and air date. Turkish cinema, especially in the second half of the 1990s, indicates a continuous increase trend in terms of the number of audience. Auteur directors or independent filmmakers are another prominent element of these years. The aim of the study is to demonstrate a general view of the last decade of Turkish cinema with the digital data. In this study, it will be tried to present the films that the audience is more interested in the years between 2008 and 2017. On the other hand, the productions, which are in the lower ranks in terms of the number of audience, will be analyzed and the reasons of this fact will be examined. With the data of the website “boxoffice.com”, a quantitative and qualitative study will be carried out based on the directors, the leading actors, number of copies/locations and the number of weeks in which the films are watched.
